“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:41-42 (NIV)
Martha was busy preparing the big meal and she wanted Jesus to notice all she was doing and to thank her for those efforts. Jesus did notice, but He had no praise for her. Instead, he gave her a gentle reminder that she was not taking care of priorities. There were more important things to do right then than cook dinner.
What sort of work was Martha doing—was it bad? No. She was busy serving. It wasn’t a question of good or bad; it was a question of better or best. Mary chose the best part—sitting at the feet of Jesus.
In the same way, we need to get our priorities in order if we are going to control our busyness. Good things often crowd out more important things. By overdoing, we sometimes have no time or energy left to do the most necessary work. We overdo until we are done in. Then we become irritable and unhappy.
When you are overloaded and overdoing, will you stay busy, or will you choose the better way?
